Design Layout and Division Basically, a Malay house is divided into 2 divisions which is front and the back, and in the middle is usually a living room also known as "Rumah Ibu" and the second one is the kitchen also known as "Dapur". Air Circulation of a Malay House Mostly Malay houses have a high roof with a timber raised on stilts and used the ground's dampness to have a better air-ventilation. As the picture shown, traditional Malay house is usually surrounded by some obstacles. The social interaction is maximized by the free-flowing, open and non-obstructive public-private areas. Children can play safely anywhere in the house compounds and in the public areas. The kumpong is under a huge canopy of coconut and other trees which keeps the kumpong well shaded and allows the usage of the open compounds even during hot afternoons.
